2007 Solutions of the Month

EWB-I explores each month a type of sustainable and appropriate solution to problems faced by communities worldwide. Unique tools (technologies, software, books, etc.) or cutting edge programs and initiatives are presented.

Appropriate technology for developing communities is usually characterized as being small scale, energy efficient, environmentally sound, labor-intensive, and controlled by the local community. It must be simple enough to be maintained by the people using it. Furthermore, it must match the user and the need in complexity and scale and must be designed to foster self-reliance, cooperation and responsibility. Studies by the World Bank and the United Nations have shown, however, that appropriate technology is critical to bringing more than 3 billion people out of poverty.

January 2008

Learn more about our revolutionary approach to affordable housing from REAL Housing, Inc. REAL Housing combines the latest in sustainable technologies with advanced construction techniques to bring affordable housing to the global community.

February 2008

Check the Earth Builders' Encyclopedia, a perfect reference for Adobe and Rammed Earth Construction. Available on a CD from Adobe Builder in New Mexico.

March - April 2008

Check the HydrAid Biosand Water filter. The seven pound unit dramatically reduces the leading causes of death and disease in the developing world, removing 100% of parasites up to 90% of bacteria and viruses from contaminated drinking water.

May 2008

Check the GreenMachine from TerraBuilt Corporation International. The machine makes Stabilized Compressed Earth Blocks (CEB) at a rate of 4-5/minute, ready for immediate use in the wall system of houses and other structures. TerraBricks are structural, made from subsoil or 92% subsoil and 8% cement with a compressive strength of 2,240 psi.

June 2008

Learn about the Watercone, an innovative device (made from plastic), that can produce clean drinking water without chemicals or electric power.

July 2008

Read about the SteriPen water purifier, that uses UV technology to purify water and provides safe drinking water anywhere.

August - September 2008

In 2005, after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, World Water & Solar Technologies Corporation created the prototype of the Mobile MaxPure™ product to provide clean water and electricity for thousands of people affected by the disaster. For an eight month period of need, the original mobile MaxPure™ unit successfully served the community of Waveland, Mississippi, producing approximately 350,000 gallons of clean, potable water and 2500 kilowatt hours of solar electricity used for emergency power.

October 2008

Solar Stik produces a portable solar and solar-wind power generator that can produce electricity for refrigeration, lighting, water purification, and communications equipment, among other applications.

November 2008

One World Living Systems (OWLS) promotes the most affordable, environmentally friendly, energy efficient, and durable housing systems available anywhere in the world using AP panels.

December 2008

The Arial Foundation is a private charitable foundation whose primary goal is to mass produce high quality, “green” homes in developing communities around the world.  The Arial Home Initiative is the name of the project to build micro-factories employing local workers to make modular panels of steel, fiberglass and insulating foam which can be assembled into a home in less than one day.  Arial Homes are solar powered and feature stand-alone plumbing and sanitary waste systems.
